Foreign businessman says expulsion from Bulgaria is politically motivated
Excerpts from report in English by Bulgarian news agency BTA web site
Sofia, 23rd August: Businessman and holder of multiple citizenships Michael Cherniy said his expulsion from this country was politically motivated. On 18th August, his residence permit was invalidated and he was barred from entering the country for a period of 10 years.
Cherniy, who is currently in France, told BTA over the phone that he was expelled from Bulgaria as a result of a political order in light of the upcoming parliamentary elections. This is the first interview he has given since National Security Service Chief Gen Atanas Atanasov issued an order barring Cherniy from entering the country for a period of 10 years.
According to Cherniy, strong-arm structures, i.e., the special services, want to prevent the holding of democratic elections. He said that the strong-arm structures should answer the question who issued the political order they are carrying out. In his view, the recent scandal with the bugging of the home of the prosecutor general is part of a plan to divert the public's attention.
Telecommunications, soccer, machine-building, metallurgy and real estate are some of the areas in which Cherniy said he has invested some 200m dollars in Bulgaria... Cherniy's lawyer Todor Batkov told BTA immediately after Atanasov's order was issued last week that his client has one company in Bulgaria in which he had invested several million dollars but that indirectly, he was responsible for 200m dollars in investments.
Batkov, who too is in France, said that he was scheduled to leave for the United States on Thursday [24th August] where on Friday he will acquaint representatives of the World Jewish Congress with the circumstances surrounding Cherniy's expulsion.
Batkov also said that Cherniy's French lawyers will notify the European Commission and the European Parliament about the existing discrepancies between Bulgarian and European legislation in light of upcoming negotiations on the Acquis Communautaire chapter on the free movement of people. There is an apparent discrepancy between Article 47 of the Aliens in the Republic of Bulgaria Act which postulates that Atanasov's order is unappealable and European legislation under which any administrative act is subject to control by the judiciary, Batkov said... _________________ Best regards,
